PICEA: SPRUCE


These majestic evergreens come in many different shapes and sizes.  The tall pyramidal shape makes an excellent specimen tree while the smaller  shrub-like spruce are great for rock gardens and flowerbeds. The needles vary in shades of blue or green.  Spruce do best in the full sun with mulching to keep soil cool & moist.

Colorado Blue Spruce

Picea pungens 'Glauca'

50-65' (19m) x 25' (7.5m) 2 Blue green Similar to the Colorado Spruce but the needles are  a very attractive bluish color.  An excellent choice for a windbreak or screen.  Also a great feature in a large space.
Colorado Green Spruce

50-65' (19m) x 25' (7.5m) 2 Silvery- green A hardy, drought resistant spruce that grows symmetrically in a broad-pyramidal form. The needles  are stiff and spiny.
Hoopsi Blue Spruce

50-65' (19m) x 15-20' (6m) 2b Intense silver blue A grafted selection of Colorado Blue Spruce with a narrow and compact form.  The Hoopsi probably has the brightest blue foliage making it a perfect feature or contrast tree.

3' (.9m) x 3-5' (1.5m) 3 Rich dark green A very slow,  low growing mound of foliage making it excellent for a low hedge or foundation plant.  It is also a good choice for shrub beds or rock gardens.
Dwarf Serbian Spruce

5' (1.5m) x 5' (1.5m) 3 Dark green  foliage with a tinge of blue on the needles An excellent dwarf, compact spruce with a dense crown. The needles are closely set.  A good choice for  rock gardens, perennial beds & foundation plantings.  
Little Gem Spruce

18" (.5m) x 5' (1.5m) 3 Rich green with  lime green growth in spring A dependable,  slow growing dwarf evergreen shaped in a dense flat-topped mound.  An excellent choice for rock gardens or for mixing in to borders or in groups.
Ohlendorffi Spruce

5' (1.5m) x 5' (1.5m) 3 Yellow- green with brown winter buds A dwarf evergreen that grows in a broad, cone shape making it an excellent specimen for a small space.
