Tender Roses for the Prairies

Tender roses require a little more care then the Hardy Roses, but the beautiful results are worth the extra effort. All tender roses, when grown in northern or colder areas, require winter protection.  

Hybrid Tea Roses - With their long pointed buds and large, double flowers, the Hybrid Tea Roses are possibly the most popular roses in the world.  They produce one bloom per long, straight stem, making them an excellent cut flower.  These are the type of roses that are usually sold in flower shops.

Grandiflora - hybrids resulting from a cross of Hybrid Tea & Floribunda roses.  They contain the best qualities of both - a profusion of the magnificent, large, long-stemmed roses. The stems are longer and the clusters smaller then the Floribunda. And although the flowers are slightly smaller, they resemble the Hybrid teas, as do the buds.

Climbing Roses- Roses with long canes that can be trained along fences or walls. Variable in flower size, form and mature habit.

Dream Roses - Easy to care for.  A quick repeat bloomer that grows on its own roots.

Chicago Peace	Medium, upright.		Phlox pink with canary yellow base. Large, double flowers with a light fruity fragrance.	The Chicago Peace Roses bloom in June through the summer. The medium sized plant is bushy with quilted, glossy,  apple-green leaves.
Chrysler Imperial	Medium, upright		Velvety, dark red flower with a rich damask rose fragrance. Large & full double blooms.	These  shapely flowers bloom proudly on straight stems, surrounded by dark, matte-green leaves.  They start blooming in June and continue through the summer,  thriving in hot temperatures.
Crowd Pleaser	Very tall, upright.		Cerise pink with brushed cream on the reverse.	Large, double flowers with a slight fragrance. The size & form is the best when the weather cools down a little.
Double Delight	Medium, slightly spreading.		A double creamy- white flower  with red edges.  Strong spicy fragrance.	These roses start blooming in June and continue through the summer.  The plant is bushy with deep green leaves.
Electron	Medium, upright		Large, very full flowers. Electric deep pink color with a sweet rosy scent.	The Electron Rose,  with its elegant form and polished dark green leaves is an international award winner. It is a fully branched, upright plant that likes moderate temperatures.
Full Sail	Medium, upright.		Fully double, bright white flowers  with a strong honeysuckle scent.	These beautifully formed flowers are accented with glossy green foliage on an upright, medium sized plant.  They open best when the temperatures are consistent and the size will be at it's best when the temperatures are cool.
Granada	Medium/tall, upright.		Swirls of gold, peach, pink & red.	A beautiful, unusually colored rose with a strong damask fragrance that blooms in June and continues through the summer.  Crinkly foliage with a dark green color  adds to the uniqueness of this rose.
King's Ransom	Medium/tall, upright		Deep yellow-golden buds open to a large, very double,  brilliant yellow flower.	This strong plant produces glossy green leaves and pointed buds that open slowly and dependably.  The flowers are large and  have a sweet fruity fragrance. Color will deepen with warmer nights.
Miss All American Beauty	Medium, bushy		A consistent deep hot pink color with a strong rose scent.	Attractive bushy plant with huge leathery leaves and large, long-lasting blossoms.
Mister Lincoln	Tall, upright		A velvety rose with a deep red color and  a strong damask, rose scent.	A large, upright plant that produces flowers from early summer until frost.  The large pointed buds and rich velvety roses are formed beautifully on long stems and set off with dark green foliage.  Likes consistent warm days & cool nights.
Oregold	Medium, upright		Large, double roses with a deep yellow-gold color and a slightly fruity fragrance.	Big pointed buds turn into large, finely formed flowers with lasting color.  Cool conditions improve the color and size of this beautiful rose. The foliage is a glossy polished dark green.
Peace	Medium, bushy		A double, golden yellow rose with a pure pink edge.	Possibly one of the best known  roses, the Peace rose has a mild fruity fragrance. It blooms in June and continues through the summer.  This easy-to-grow plant has large glossy green leaves and grows into a medium sized bush.
Royal Amethyst	Medium, slightly spreading.		Blended lavender color with a strong fruity fragrance.	A strong vigorous grower with large,  deep green leaves.  Cooler temperatures bring out bigger flowers.
Sterling Silver	Medium/low, rounded.		Unique silvery lavender  grey with a citrus blossom & fruit fragrance.	A landmark rose with shapely pointed buds and glossy green leaves.  Very attractive in bouquets.
Toro	Tall, upright.		Dark dusky red flowers with a moderate rose scent.	These large buds must have warm nights in order to open, and even in the hottest weather, they open very slowly to high-centered huge blossoms.  Long strong stems hold the flowers up proudly to display  their perfect form. This tall plant grows vigorously with large dark green leathery leaves.
Touch of Class	Medium/tall, bushy.		Blending of orange, pink & cream in the pointed buds finish a warm coral.	These large blossoms grow in the perfect rose form - slowly spiraling open, while keeping the pin-point center.  The plant grows vigorously, producing many long stems which are set off by deep green leaves and mahogany new growth.
Tropicana	Medium/tall, spreading.		Large, fully double blooms that are a clear coral orange in color.	The Tropicana blossoms are large & shapely with a sweet fruity fragrance.  The large buds are pointed and borne on long stems, surrounded by glossy green leaves.
FLORIBUNDA & GRANDIFLORA ROSES
Candy Apple	Tall, upright.		Lustrous apple red, double blooms.	Grandiflora.  Masses of long-lasting flowers blooming on strong stems that are set off by  olive green leaves.  Prefers warm nights.
Chihuly	Medium, bushy.		Multi-colors - blushing with subtly-striped apricot yellow to dazzling orange & deep red.	Floribunda. Impeccable style with it's flashy display of colors among the deep dark green leaves & mahogany-red new growth.
Fragrant Plum	Tall, upright.		Lavender blushing purple roses with strong fruity fragrance.	Grandiflora.  This vigorous plant grows tall with lush, deep green foliage.  Produces masses of long elegant buds atop premium length cutting stems.  The color brightens with some heat but the form is best when cool.
Intrigue	Medium, bushy.		Double, plum- purple flowers with an intense citrus fragrance.  Showy buds are also a deep purple-red.	Floribunda. Award winning rose that blooms on a bushy, rounded plant from June through the summer.
Love	Medium, upright.		Scarlet red flowers with a pure white reverse. Slight rose fragrance.	Grandiflora. New growth on this super productive plant is reddish, turning into a very dark green. The flower color is consistent but the size may shrink in heat.
Scentimental	Medium, rounded.		Burgundy-red swirled with creamy white. Each petal is unique in its color combination.	Floribunda.  With it's strong, sweet spicy smell and colorful petals, the Scentimental is perfect for potpourri.
Sunsprite	Medium, rounded & bushy.		Double, deep yellow flower with a sweet licorice fragrance.	Floribunda.  Growing on an attractive bush with glossy, deep green leaves, the Sunsprite is  one of the most fragrant roses. It blooms repeatedly from early summer until frost. It has good disease resistance.
CLIMBING ROSES
Don Juan	Climbing canes 12 - 14 feet.		Deep velvety red. Large & full.	This proven performer has a strong rose fragrance and blooms on new and old wood. The leaves are a glossy dark green color.
Golden Showers	Climbing canes 12 - 14 feet.		Clusters of fragrant, ruffled,  bright yellow roses.	This award winning rose blooms in abundant clusters on old and new wood. Free flowering with bright green leaves.
Joseph's Coat	Climbing canes 10 - 12 feet.		Medium size, double flower with ever-changing hues of red, pink, orange & yellow.	This popular rose, blooms in plentiful clusters on new and old wood. They have a light tea fragrance and are  surrounded by glossy apple-green leaves.    Not hardy.
DREAM ROSES
Dream Orange	90-100cm x 90-100cm		An  irridescent orange, double bloom with a medium fragrance.	This compact, bushy plant has an excellent resistance to disease. The roses bloom in June through the summer.
Dream Pink	1m x 1m		Double, delicate pink flowers with a soft musk fragrance.	Flowers  start blooming in June and continue through the summer.
Dream Red	1m x 1m		Double, velvety red flowers with a light fragrance.	Roses  bloom repeatedly throughout the summer into the fall.
Dream Yellow	60-75cm x 60-75 cm		Double rich yellow blooms with a fruity fragrance.	Roses  start blooming in June and continue throughout the summer.
